DEEP LISTENING® IMMERSION AT KULTURHUSET SKOLAN –
VÄNNERSTA, SWEDEN 21-24 JULY 2025
ABOUT:
Singer and composer-improviser Kristin Norderval and composer-improviser Björn Eriksson, together with tactile sound artist, improviser and instrument builder Patrick Dallard will lead participants through a deeper connection to listening with the Deep Listening® practices as developed by renowned composer-performer Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016) together with Heloise Gold and IONE.
Deep Listening® explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature of listening. The practice includes bodywork, dreamwork, sonic meditations and interactive performance to cultivate a heightened awareness of one’s sonic environment, both external and internal. It is playful, collaborative, and improvisatory. As certified Deep Listening® practitioners, Kristin, Björn and Patrick continue Pauline Oliveros’s practice of attentive sonic awareness.
The workshop is open to anyone wishing to explore listening and sounding inspired by the sounds of daily life, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. No previous musical training is necessary. We invite participants to explore listening, sounding and dreaming together in the beautiful environment of the High Coast of northern Sweden, Vännersta Kramfors.

FACILITATORS BIOS:
KRISTIN NORDERVAL
As both a composer and singer, Kristin Norderval is inspired by hybridity, interactivity and the idea that everything we do is site-specific. In her operas, chamber works, sound installations, and music for dance and theater, she blends acoustic and electronic sound, home-made instruments, voices, machines, and the acoustic resonance of space. In her solo works she processes her voice in real time often combining it with prerecorded sounds to create complex sonic layers and unusual soundscapes. Custom controllers allow her to manipulate the processed sound with physical gestures. Her work with Pauline Oliveros over two decades was a primary influence in combining structural rigor with improvisation.
Kristin first earned her living as a soprano soloist with a focus on contemporary music, particularly American composers from the New York School. Returning to composition after her 40th birthday, her compositions have received acclaim. Her solo CD Aural Histories was listed by The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross as one of “Ten Notable Classical Music Recordings of 2012”. Her opera The Trials of Patricia Isasa (2016) won Quebec´s OPUS prize in two categories: best contemporary music and best production. Kristin was awarded a PhD in Artistic Research from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2023.
BJÖRN ERIKSSON
Björn Eriksson is a sound improviser, sound designer, sound engineer, composer and teacher. He has been playing and working with sound and music since childhood. At the age of four, he started creating improvised cluster music and prepared piano works as an act of joyful play. At ten, he received a reel-to-reel tape recorder as a birthday gift, stimulating and continuing his act of playing and listening. Since then, he has been on a path of exploring listening and sound in performance, electronic music, and more. Björn plays with Aleatoriska, Great Learning Orchestra, Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, DVN-EAO (Doug van Nort) and in other constellations and solo. He received his Deep Listening Certificate in 2015 from the Center of Deep Listening (CDL), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. Björn is a member of the swedish composers association FST since 2017.
PATRICK DALLARD
Patrick Dallard is a tactile sound artist, improviser and instrument builder. Since 2009, Patrick Dallard has an ongoing collaboration with Julia Adzuki as SymbioLab, spanning art and ecology, tactile sound and relational practices. They are now embarking on an off-grid adventure, building a center for ARTISTS in RESONANCE, in the forest outside Järna, Sweden. A place for somatic, sonic, ecological and relational art to grow and to nourish the wild.
Patrick first experienced Deep Listening in 2017 at Hola folkhögskola, on a retreat facilitated by Björn Eriksson, Sharon Stewart and Norman Lowrey. The experience was nothing short of
transformative, opening potentials of listening, deepening artistic practice and bringing revelations through dream work. Continuing studies through the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Patrick became qualifed as a Deep Listening faciliator in 2018. In gratitude to the work of Pauline Oliveros, Patrick wishes to share the generous experience of listening with others.
The Deep Listening® Immersion is affiliated with The Center for Deep Listening® at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA.
